A fall morning routine is exactly what you need as we enter the cool, crisp months. Keep on reading to find out how to create your very own!
As we leave the summer months behind, it’s time to think about transitioning our morning routines to match the flow of autumn. Fall is a time to naturally slow down. Just like the leaves on the trees change colors, our energy and desires change as well. In this way, the ideal fall morning routine is cozier and slower than the morning routine you followed during the summer. Below are five ideas you’ll absolutely love.
FALL MORNING ROUTINE IDEAS
Wake up a bit later.
As the days get shorter in the fall, it means the mornings gradually get darker. You might naturally feel a pull to sleep in due to this. If this happens to you, don’t fight it! Just adjust your schedule to wake up a bit later than you normally would, and extend your bedtime if that helps.
Get outside.
After the dog days of summer, the fall is the perfect time to take advantage of the outdoors. Take your morning walk, stretching routine or meditation sessions outside in the cooler air.
Indulge in a cozy beverage.
It’s time to ditch iced coffee and swap it for something a bit more comforting. Opt for something like hot tea or a classic pumpkin spiced latte instead.
Eat a warming breakfast.
While you’re at it, you should also ditch your smoothies and yogurt for warmer breakfast options, such as eggs or oatmeal. Not only are they filling, but they’ll contribute to your overall cozy morning vibe.
Incorporate a reading or journaling session.
Slow your mornings down by taking time to read a book simply for enjoyment. You could also do a little journaling if that’s more your speed. This gratitude journal is so easy to keep up with and really gets you aligned for the day ahead!
For a little real life inspiration, here’s what my ideal fall morning routine looks like:
MY FALL MORNING ROUTINE
- Wake up at 7:00am. During the spring and summer months I like to wake up around 6:00am since the sun rises around that time. When it’s the fall time, though, I don’t mind snoozing a little longer when it’s still dark out.
- Gear up for an outdoor walk. After brushing my teeth and splashing my face with water, I lace up my sneakers, grab a sweatshirt, and get outside first thing. There’s no better way to start the day than warming up your physical body in the cool, crisp air. I aim to get at least 30 minutes to an hour in.
- Take a shower. In the colder months, I prefer to shower in the morning. Even though I wake up later and try to get outside first thing, I find it’s just harder for my body to wake up when it’s chilly. A nice, warm shower is essential for making me feel alert as possible.
- Get ready for the day. This is pretty much always the same, but I’ll throw on a cozy robe and do my skincare, makeup, and hair. Once that’s all done, I’ll get dressed for the day. My fall uniform mostly consists of leggings and big, cozy sweaters.
- Make a cup of tea. I’m a huge iced coffee girlie all year round since I’m a New Englander. But in the fall, I like to save that for later in the day and opt for a hot cup of tea in the morning instead. This earl grey tea is my go-to — I take it with a splash of cream and it’s perfect.
- Whip up a hot breakfast. I usually opt to make breakfast tacos, but sometimes a toasted bagel with butter and cream cheese is in the rotation, too.
- Eat breakfast and read. Once I have my food and beverage ready, I like to take it to my living room and snuggle up in my reading corner with whatever book I’m currently reading. I prefer to read for pleasure during this time — the non-fiction stuff can wait for later! I enjoy my breakfast slowly and really try to savor this slow part of my fall morning routine.
- Tidy up the kitchen. After I’ve reached a good stopping point in my book, I take my mug and plate back to the kitchen sink. I’ll put away any breakfast items I may have left out, and also like to empty the dish rack and dishwasher at this time.
- Review to-do list for the day. The final part of my fall morning routine is to check over my to-do list that I wrote the night before. I make any adjustments necessary, but after such a relaxing yet productive morning, I’m usually ready to dive right in to the main part of the day.
