Implementing a monthly reset for each new month is one of the best ways to keep your life on track. This monthly reset routine will provide you with the results you want.
All About The Monthly Reset
I love having a good monthly reset. I’m always excited for a new month to get here because it feels like a clean slate, and I always enjoy having the opportunity to start fresh. Learn all about the monthly reset below!
WHAT IS A MONTHLY RESET? A monthly reset is a time when you prepare for the upcoming month. It allows you to see what the month has in store for you and make decisions about how you want to proceed with your day-to-day life during that timeframe.
WHY HAVE A MONTHLY RESET? While you can have goals for an entire year and have daily to-do lists, a month allows for the perfect amount of time to pass before checking in with yourself. Things are bound to change in your life after a month has passed, and it’s important to take note of those changes so you can make necessary adjustments. Monthly resets are the ideal way to turn over a new leaf and transition into the new month.
WHEN DO YOU HAVE A MONTHLY RESET? This varies month to month, but I typically like to do my monthly reset on one of last days of the previous month, or one of the first days of the new month that needs the reset. It all sort of depends on what day of the week the first of the new month falls on. Just do whatever feels best for you!
Read on to learn about the steps you need to take to have a successful monthly reset.
5 Steps For The Perfect Monthly Reset
1. Reflect on last month.
Before you can move ahead into the new month, it’s a good idea to think about the current/previous month. How did it go, in general? I like to go into my phone and look back through all the pictures I took that month. It helps to jog my memory of the things I did and is fun to reminisce, even if there were rough patches. It’s a good time to take note of the things you loved about last month so you can carry that same energy over into the new one. The same thing goes for the things you didn’t particularly like — acknowledge that they happened, but leave them in the past if possible.
2. Update your calendar.
This is probably my favorite part of a monthly reset. I have a huge whiteboard calendar on my fridge that I always look forward to updating. I use a color-coded system that I adhere to when writing down appointments, birthdays, events, special dates, etc. (Blue ink is for anything pertaining to me, orange ink is for my husband, purple ink is for birthdays, and green ink is for events/special dates.) It’s a great time to look through your wallet or purse for any appointment cards you may have forgotten about, too. If you happen to discover timing conflicts, make sure to reschedule things as needed.
3. Review your finances.
In my opinion, it’s always a good idea to know where your finances are at. Each month, right around the time of our monthly reset, my husband and I like to have what we call a “finance night.” We sit in our living room and screencast our finances (we use Credit Karma) to our TV so we can view them on a big screen. We make it fun by eating takeout as we review our spending and update our savings goals. Although in the beginning reviewing finances felt like the most boring and tedious thing ever, it’s something I really look forward to now! Plus, whenever I have the urge to buy something on impulse, I usually am able to refrain myself with since our budget is top of mind.
4. Refresh your space.
Be sure to spruce up your surroundings for the month ahead! This can include some basic yet not daily chores, such as changing your bedding, vacuuming upholstered furniture, or cleaning out your fridge. You can also do things like get new flowers for your vases, organize a cabinet that’s been driving you nuts, or take your clothes out of storage if it’s a new season. Basically, do whatever will make you feel best as you head into the new month.
5. Revisit your routines.
This is a big one. Think about all the routines you’ve been keeping up with as of late. Do you want to keep them the same or change them up? Maybe it’s the end of the summer and the fall months are approaching. You might want to think about how to make your morning and evening routines feel cozier and slower. Or maybe the weather is starting to get really nice where you live and you want to start taking your workouts outside instead of at the gym. I’ve said this before on Routine Ready, and I’ll say it again — we’re humans, not robots. It’s totally natural that as the seasons change, our goals and desires will, too. Don’t stick with the same routines just because you feel like you have to. Find the routines that you flow with, and release the ones that feel like a struggle.
