55 Seasonal Activities To Make Routine Fun

This blog post is all about incorporating seasonal activities into your routines.

Routines can get a bad rap for being too structured. Some people complain that routines don’t work for them because they’re not robots and like each day to be a little bit different from the next. As an expert and general lover of routines, I find this offensive and completely untrue 😂 but I guess I understand where they’re coming from. What the naysayers might not realize is that there is a way to make your routines feel more authentic and less like you’re just trudging through your to-do list — and that’s by incorporating fun seasonal activities!

I live in New England, so I’m lucky that I get to experience all four seasons. I love living seasonally because I get to enjoy the novelties that each month brings while feeling more connected to time as it passes by. Besides that, it helps to create tradition and fond memories.

At the beginning of each season, I like to sit down and write out a big list of seasonal activities that I want to do. I highly recommend that you do the same! I always leave a little free time in my daily routine, so sometimes I’m able to squeeze in something fun, usually get to do the bulk of the activities with family and friends on the weekends.

Below is a list of fun activities sectioned out by season. While we all live in different climates, many of these can still apply no matter where you live. I hope you take inspiration from them when you’re compiling your own list of seasonal activities!

Winter

Here are some ideas (mostly indoor friendly) to help you beat the winter blues:

  • Go ice skating
  • Go bowling
  • Have a snowball fight, outdoor or indoor (we bought these indoor snowballs last year and had a blast playing with our little cousins on Christmas Eve)
  • Visit a museum
  • Make homemade pasta
  • Make sourdough bread
  • Bake to your heart’s content (think: sugar cookies, peanut butter cookies, brownies, cherry pie, etc.)
  • Build a snowman (or sandman, for my warmer climate friends!)
  • Complete a puzzle
  • Have a game night
  • Make homemade hot chocolate
  • Put up holiday decorations (think: Christmas, Hanukkah, Lunar New Year,  Valentine’s Day, etc.)
  • Read by the fire (if you don’t have a fireplace, go to your local coffee shop and snuggle up there for a few hours)
  • Plan (or go on!) a tropical vacation
  • Make an authentic yet labor-intensive food with a bunch of family and friends, such as tamales or pierogis

Spring

Here are some ideas to enjoy this blooming season:

  • Plant a garden
  • Pick up trash on Earth day
  • Visit a farmer’s market
  • Pick your own flowers
  • Paint and set up a bird house
  • Buy houseplants
  • Go for a bike ride
  • Have a spring cleaning day — but then reward your hard work with a trip to the ice cream shop!
  • Put up holiday decorations (think: Easter, Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Father’s Day, etc.)
  • Go on a hike
  • Start eating meals outdoors on nice days

Summer

Here are some ideas that will help you soak up the sun:

  • Enjoy some delicious grilled meals
  • Host a cookout
  • Go swimming
  • Have a beach day
  • Go kayaking
  • Make homemade popsicles
  • Have a fire and make s’mores
  • Go berry picking
  • Go camping (even if it’s in your backyard!)
  • Put decorations up for the 4th of July
  • Watch a fireworks show or get some sparklers
  • Spend as much time outside as possible
  • Have regular ice cream dates with friends
  • Play yard games (my brother bought this game for his house and we love it!)
  • Buy a new bathing suit you feel great in

Fall

Here are some ideas to make you feel all comfy and cozy:

  • Paint pumpkins (this is a tradition my best friend and I have, as seen in the picture of this blog post!)
  • Go on a hayride
  • Make pumpkin seeds
  • Rake leaves (and jump in the pile!)
  • Buy a fall scented candle
  • Enjoy your morning beverage outside cuddled up in a big sweatshirt or sweater
  • Make cozy meals, such as stews or chilis
  • Put up holiday decorations (think: Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.)
  • Go apple picking
  • Bake a homemade apple pie or apple crisp
  • Swap your iced coffee out for a warm beverage, like a pumpkin spice latte
  • Go trick or treating
  • Try making a new side dish for your Thanksgiving feast

Pro tip: When you sit down to make your list of seasonal activities, do your best to schedule a majority of them in so that there’s no excuse to miss out! And if you have a chill weeknight or day off, try to do a smaller activity. There’s nothing more satisfying than crossing your list off and enjoying the seasons to the fullest 😊
